The Con Artist - Review

For those of you waiting for the movie "The Con Artist" here's a review I translated.
The original review in german language can be found here at "outnow.ch".

The review has nothing to do with my opinion of the movie.
The user crs gave it a rating of 2/6, but I think that this is no reason for thinking it's a bad movie. crs gave "Next" 1/6 and "Disturbia" 2/6 - two really cool movies imo.

The Con Artist (2010)
Or: Art is a matter of opinion

After being in prison for some time the car thief Vince (Rossif Sutherland) is released. Soon after, his former "employer" Kranski reminds Vince that he owes him a lot of cash. Kranski suggests that Vince finds that money by doing what he does best: stealing cars. But Vince seems more interested in creating sculptures from scrap metal, rather than stealing cars from others. By the time the art dealer Belinda (Rebecca Romijn) takes a look at his sculptures she is impressed and wants to sell the sculptures of the ex-prisoner.

Soon Vince earns a lot of money through his work as artist and pays back the money to Kranski. Kranski is not mad about Vince being an artist but he wants him to help him with a big coup where Kranski wants to steal several cars at once. Unfortunately this coup is sheduled for the same night as the premiere of Vince' new sculpture.

Rating:

In one episode of "The Simpsons" Homer tries to put together a BBQ. But he drops the instructions into cement so that only the french version of it is readable. His only chance is to put it together by instinct. The result is a chaos but an art dealer seeing it later in the episode thinks it's a great piece of art. [...] In Risa Bramon GarciasThe Con Artist“ Vince also specialized in this kind of art where different parts are put together to a sculpture. Also the movie itself feels like somehow put together of a bunch of different things.

The crew had 24 days for filming. A vast number of authors were co-writing the script and even while the movie was filmed things had been changed. These facts are just too noticable when watching it. A lot of things had been tried but hardly anything is working. Scenes which are intended to be funny simply aren't, the lovestory of Vince and Kirsten leaves the viewer cold and instead of being funny, Donald Sutherland and Rebecca Romijn are just awkward. These two are to best know actors of the inconspicuous cast.

"The Con Artist" is a movie offering almost no climax at all. The linear story isn't telling anything new and a lot of things seem like cribed from other movies. For Example: The scene in the depot reminds of „The Departed“ and the discussion about stealing cars feels like a "Gone in 60 seconds" rip-off.

Conclusion:
The second movie of director Garcia is featureless and will be forgotten two days after seeing it. The idiom "Too many chefs spoil the broth" applies best for "The Con Artist". Several authors pieced together a story for this movie but at the end nothing really fits - just like Homers BBQ.

Rating 2/6
